Our 10th Anniversary

MakeBelieve Arts was born in the bedroom of a flat in Deptford on 02.02.02. And on 02.02.12, 10 years later… and still in Deptford, we hosted a fantastic celebration!

The event kicked of with speeches from the Artistic Director, Trisha Lee, Sir Steve Bullock the Mayor of Lewisham, our Chair of the Board Glenys Ingham and memory book recitals spanning the whole 10 years. Amongst the speeches were performances from The JR Theatre Company of John Roan School, our Boys Literacy Project and a snippet from our Giant Tours science workshop.

Here is a taste of what the Mayor had to say on the night...

"I want to congratulate MakeBelieve Arts on its 10th anniversary - 10 is an important anniversary and one where you look back at what has been achieved and forward to what might come next...

MakeBelieve Arts does its core work really well and has inspired many, many young people in the last ten years but it also plays another role in our borough.

I know that these are challenging times - it is difficult for public bodies like Lewisham Council and it is even harder for social enterprises.  I can't wave a magic wand and turn the economy round I'm afraid but I do know that organisations which deliver imaginative programmes and do so with a high level of professionalism are the ones that have the best chance of succeeding.  MakeBelieve Arts is just such an organisation and it serves as a model for the sector in Lewisham.

I wish MakeBelieve Arts every success in the future and look forward to celebrating your 20th anniversary in due course."

A memory book was compilled and given out on the night. From poems to anecdotes, funny recollections to moving memoirs, the MakeBelieve Arts memory book has it all! We posted 10 teasers on our Facebook wall, Twitter and blog in the lead-up to the BIG DAY. And now you can download the entire testimonial book here.

And Trish worked tirelessly to create a celebratory film for the event. Watch it here!
