Moving On Up

Using drama techniques to examine issues and concerns about changing schools

MakeBelieve Arts offers programmes working with pupils and parents on their transitions from nursery to primary AND primary to secondary school

Nursery:

  • Working with young children and their parents, using storytelling and drama techniques, to ease the transition from nursery and other Early Years settings to primary school

Year 6 (Summer Term):

  • A variety of in-school drama workshops - sessions which examine the fears and hopes of pupils as well as exploring some of the myths that exist about secondary school
  • Play in a Day sessions - open to Year 6 and Year 7 pupils with the aim of producing a piece of theatre at the end of the day that examines the issues and view points of the pupils, from the dual perspective of being about to move and having already moved schools
  • Week long programmes that explore the issues of transition and introduce pupils to their new school environment

Year 7 (Autumn Term):

  • A week long Head Start programme helping new Year 7 pupils settle in
  • Working with Year 7s in smaller groups tackling particular issues such as numeracy and literacy
  • Peer Education - using Year 8s and above as role models and mentors
