Creative Approaches to...
Mathematics
MakeBelieve Arts run a series of INSET sessions for teachers of Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 exploring an innovative new approach to maths and training. The two days devoted to each phase offer a fantastic opportunity for teachers who want to take this work further and who have a real passion for developing a more creative approach to teaching in their maths lessons.
MakeBelieve Arts, in a unique aspect to this training, employ five artists to attend the INSET days, adding their valuable creative input to the practical aspect of the days and supporting the development and structuring of new lesson plans arising out of the work with teachers. Teachers leave the sessions equipped with notepads and journals and a range of creative approaches to mathematics that they are prepared to try out with their children.
During the first INSET day for each age group we explore in depth a variety of Creative Approaches to Mathematics. Part of the session involves addressing Kieran Egan's model for teaching through storytelling and looking at ways of adapting this model to the demands of the curriculum for mathematics. The use of theatre and drama techniques to enhance learning thorough story will be a vital ingredient to the day.
Once the first INSET days are over, the five artists work with MakeBelieve Arts developing further the ideas and mathematical stories that were initiated during the sessions. We then come back together with the teachers for a follow up session to disseminate the worked up stories and lesson plans, encouraging teachers to try out the ideas and feedback to us on how it works.
