Face-painting, gardening, the Mayor and more...
What do you get when you put together an empty shop, plants, face-painters, a steel band, jewellery-makers, the Mayor, a bag full of balloons, and a will and a way of making things happen? The launch of Lee Green Community Centre!
On Wednesday the 28th July, Lee Green Lives, Lewisham Youth Service, MakeBelieve Arts and the Lee Green Local Assembly celebrated the opening of the Lee Green Community Centre. From 80 year-olds to 8-month olds, members of the community turned out in force to welcome the Centre's launch and get a taste of things to come.
The Centre opened with a bang (thanks in part to balloons popping all afternoon!), as Mayor of Lewisham, Sir Steve Bullock, cut the ribbon and declared the Centre officially open. To much cheering and applause as the steel band kicked off, the gardeners got their hands dirty and the knitting group created mini-masterpieces. The launch allowed the community to participate in taster workshops and activities including parent and toddler music sessions, potting and planting, art-making, singing workshops and more.
The fact that so many community members turned out to be part of the event is a testament to the desire to bring life and vitality back to Leegate Shopping Centre. MakeBelieve Arts is extremely proud to be one of the partners in getting the Lee Green Community Centre off the ground. We can't wait for our programme to begin!
