The Woman Who Cooked Everything

Once there was a woman who liked to cook, she liked to cook everything...

A collection of stories written and illustrated by children aged 3-7 years from the London Borough of Lewisham and Tower Hamlets.

The stories in this collection have been gathered by means of the Helicopter Technique of storytelling and Story Acting based on the work of Vivian Gussin Paley.

The Woman Who Cooked Everything... programme involved children in creating illustrations for a book and suggesting outcomes for a theatre show that would be suitable for Foundation Stage and KS1 pupils.

The stories are inspiring. We hope you enjoy reading the wise words of thei youngest of age groups and wondering with awe at the depths present in their illustrations.

Success in the Creative Classroom

Success in the Creative Classroom: Using Enjoyment to Promote Excellence (Paperback)
by Stephen Bowkett, Trisha Lee, Tim Harding & Roy Leighton

Written in response to the Excellence and Enjoyment agenda by a star-studded cast of educationalists, the book demonstrates that the more fun you're having, the more you'll learn and want to learn. The focus is on creativity, using a variety of creative expressions - storytelling, dialogue, play, poetry and song - showing how they can be best used for teaching children today. Each chapter opens with a different genre, such as story, which is then underpinned by research and theory and expanded into resources for activities supported by case studies. This is an essential book for all teachers, especially those who struggle with using forms of creative expression to enhance their students' learning.

Monsters & Superheroes

A Documentary showing MakeBelieve Arts innovative Peer Group Education work

This documented was produced by Cor Films and tell the story of MakeBelieve Arts first involvement with the Peer Group Education project, where sixteen ten year olds were given responsibility for leading Helicopter sessions in Myatt Garden Primary School Nursery and Reception classes

Over a five week period the pupils attended master classes and were given workshop-leader training by MakeBelieve Arts. They took stories from the children, led the class in acting out and participated in debates about the technique. Some hated it, finding it difficult and chaotic. Others enjoyed the challenge. All of them had moments of connection and questioned their own ideas about what story should be.

This documentary tells of their journey.

"I'm glad you made it clear that a story can be one word. A three year old told me, as her story, 'once upon a time', I asked her how she might act it out and she got up and skipped around the table. 'Like that', she said, showing us the passage of time brilliantly."
